Shaped like a giant ear protruding from Kyushu's northeastern shores is the Kunisaki Peninsula, an anthology of mountains engulfed with firm Buddhist faith. At the heart of this somewhat circular cape is Mt. Futago, from which the land indentations seem to ripple out. Rokugo Manzan, an ancient Buddhism sect, began in this very mountain. While there are no particular places of interest in the quaint settlements, the Kunisaki Peninsula is famous for its plethora of religious bas-relief images found in remote caves and temples.
After an arduous trek amid the lush forests and steep ravines, travelers may opt to soak the fatigue away in a local onsen (hot spring) or to sample the local seafood cuisine.
