Found at the heart of Honshu Isand, Kanazawa is a treasure trove of feudal-age architecture, reminiscent of this rustic town's past incarnation as the stronghold of Japan's second most powerful clan, the Maeda. Kanazawa's rich past left behind noteworthy landmarks that today serve as evidence to the town's centuries-old opulence.
Perhaps, the best symbol of the city's former glory is the Kanazawa Castle. Majority of the castle has been destroyed by fires, though the Ishikawa-mon Gate remains erect. Just past the citadel is the Kenrokuen, widely known as one of Japan's "three most beautiful landscape gardens," although some claim that it is the loveliest. The vast compound is adorned with tranquil ponds, shaded lanes, and patches of sakura (cherry blossom) fields, making it an ideal venue for an afternoon stroll or picnic.
Outside the palace complex are three chaya (teahouse) districts, where guests are still entertained by geisha. A popular okiya (geisha house) worth a visit is Shima, which today serves as a museum exhibiting elaborate combs and shamisen picks the geisha once used.
