Izu Peninsula Travel Guide
History-steeped towns, rugged karst coasts, tasty cuisines, and relaxing onsens (hot springs) characterize one of Japan's prime offbeat destinations, the Izu Peninsula (Izu-hanto). The peninsula offers a convenient, train ride escape from Tokyo's neon lights and "hustle-and-bustle" lifestyle.
Most visitors kick-off their weekend getaway in Atami, a resort town that prides itself as one of the country's "Three Great Hot Springs," with its plethora of onsens ranging from the ritzy stone-lined pools, to the budget-friendly wooden bathtubs. Another place of interest is the MOA Museum of Art, which showcases local pottery and Chinese ceramics from the collection of the city founder and famed religious leader, Mokichi Okada.
At the peninsula's south is Ito, whose claim to fame is its role as setting in James Clavell's period novel, Shogun. Not far from Ito are the high, dramatic cliffs of Jogasaki. On the other side of the peninsula is Dogashima, where boat rides provide guests with a preview of the natural topographical gallery.
Replicas of the historic Black Ships of Commodore Perry are also on exhibit at Shimoda, fondly referred to as "Izu Peninsula's Down Under." Commodore Matthew Perry is the American admiral who opened Japan's ports for trade.
