Ito and Jogasaki Travel Guide
Found southwest of the bustling national capital, Tokyo, Ito exudes a distinctive bucolic air that entices visitors to take their load off and relax. The coastal town offers a weekend escape away from the city stress and the tourist hordes in most of Japan's cultural and historical destinations. While Ito may sound alien to the common tourist, the city prides itself as one of the settings name-dropped in James Clavell's bestselling novel, Shogun.
Ito's prime attraction is the Tokaikan, a former inn but is considered an important landmark today. Consisting of three stories separately designed by different artisans, the olden lodge reeks of the feudal-age heydays when a geisha used to grace the tatami floor mats with an elegant performance.
Those after an au naturelle panorama can head to Jogasaki, whose coast is often seen in films with suicide scenes. Getting a breathtaking view would require a bit of walking to the volcanic soil and thick pine forests that lead to a towering light house and a rewarding panorama.
