The Glossary
While Japan's more popular districts Tokyo and Kyoto may lure tourists away from the rugged Aomori Prefecture, this northern region is staking its claim to fame as a prime destination. Taking pride on having the country's largest apple plantation and oldest cherry tree, as well as the gateway to an active volcano, this largely bucolic prefecture teems with interesting cultural and natural attractions.
Tourists usually kick-off their trip by going to Aomori City, the main commercial hub. After spending a few days roaming street bazaars and watching the raucous cultural performances of the Nebuta Festival (which happens in the first week of August), one can head out to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Shirakami-Sanchi, one of Japan's last immaculate beech forest which offers a truly enriching nature trek. A devil's playground Osorezan ("Mount Fear") is a very active volcano, believed to be the threshold to the spirit world. Those who want a taste of Old Japan can go to Hirosaki, which houses a lavish spread of centuries' old castles and pagodas. The impressive Towada crater lake, with its inky-blue waters and jagged rim, makes a good conclusion to a visit to the prefecture.
