With its plethora of charming towns with neighboring onsen ("hot spring") and spines of lush mountains, Akita Prefecture (Akita-ken) is an ideal place to unwind, an escape from Tokyo's commercial buzz and city rush. Located in Honshu's northwestern bend, the prefecture is also known for its indigenous dog breed called Akita-inu ("Akita dog").
Most visitors start at Akita, the prefecture's namesake capital, which features the tranquil Senshu Park where one can have a leisurely weekend stroll. A few hours away, one can have a glimpse of Old Japan in Kakunodate, popularly known as "Little Kyoto" or "samurai village" because of its impressive collection of architecture that dates back to the country's feudal period. Heading back down will lead to the glass-like waters and breezy shores of Tazawa-ko (Lake Tazawa), which recently merged with the charming historical town to form one city called Nishikishi. Up north is Hachimantai, a hiker's Mecca featuring challenging mountain trails peppered with covert hot springs.
