Regarded as the Second Historic City in the World by the UNESCO, the city is known for its towering turrets and wind towers (badguirs), traditional components in Persian architecture, providing natural ventilation to a building. Its fine silk weaving industry is not to be ignored. Even Marco Polo was astounded by the quality of Yadz silk and carpet, describing Yazd in his accounts as one noble city. Hemmed between Dasht e- Kavir and Dasht-e Lut, Yazd is sometimes called the "bride of the Kavir" due to its location in the middle of a plateau overlooking the scenery of the Shir Kuh, the tallest mountain in the region.
Yazd may not be as a blockbuster hit to tourist such as the old cities of Persepolis and Isfahan but its connection with the wilderness is captivating. Being an enclave of Zoroastrianism, Yazd is a place to wander and get lost in its historic streets peppered with a 3,000 year long history dating back to the time of the Median Empire. Due to its remote desert location, Yazd had remained largely immune from large battles and ravages of war. It was a sanctuary for those fleeing from mayhem in other parts of Iran.
Places to see include the Zoroastrian Temple or the Fire Temple where a sacred flame has burned non-stop since 470 A.D. along with the Towers of Silence where the dead are left to be picked off by vultures, a belief of the Zoroastrian religion. Tourists can also try out how locals occupy themselves with rug-weaving and pottery-making. Those with a sweet tooth can sample the local pashmak (cotton candy), baghlava (a pastry) and ghottab (a candy).
