Hands down, Shiraz is Iran's example for all things fine, beautiful and learned in the country, being the heart of the Persian culture. Poetry, architecture and craftsmanship flow from this place like wine during a festivity. The birth place of the great Persian poets Sa'di and Hafez, Shiraz cradles the exquisite 18th century citadel of Karim Khan-e Zand and the stunning Nasir a-Mulk mosque.
Shiraz's architectural feel seems a bit older compared to the neighboring towns and cities. It witnessed the peak of its prosperity during the time of Karim Khan Zand when it became the capital of Persia. Modernity has caught up with it but is tempered by the classic beauty of the place: the streets are wider, the gardens are inviting, the buildings and universities offer the confluence of the best in medieval and Islamic architecture.
Lovers of Persian poetry and literature pay homage to Hafez and Sa'di by visiting their resting place nestled in garden blooms while the holy shrine of Hazrat Seyed Mir Ahmad has been a major site of Shiite pilgrimage and has lent a certain religious importance to Shiraz.
Shiraz is a city of gardens. Tall cypress trees and rose gardens flourish in this place. Well-known gardens that exemplify Persian sensibility are Bagh e-Eram with its main façade illustrating the Qajari architecture and Bagh-e-Del-gosha, also known as the "Garden of Hearts Delights," which is famous for its orange grove. The emergence of major mosques and schools in Shiraz reflects people's thirst for knowledge and their religious commitment. Among these buildings are the 40-column nocturnal prayer quarter of Masjid e-Vakil, the ancient Jame'e Atigh Mosque and the splendid Madrassa e-Khan, remnants from the Safavid period.
Shiraz, an old city it may be, has various types of hotels and other luxury hospitality establishments as well as plenty of restaurants, parks and movie house catering to tourists.
