The island-province of Sumbawa in West Nusa Tenggara is visited only by surfing enthusiasts, which is unfortunate because as an island of great waves and sandy white beaches, Sumbawa is an undiscovered gem.
Sumbawa, which is bigger than Bali and Lombok combined, is in its initial development stage, challenging travelers for a rocky ride on its dirt roads and uncomfortable facilities to use or sleep in. Surf camps are available in Sekongkang and Hu'u, while non-wave-seekers can hike in the lush tropical jungles, watch traditional performances at the Sultan's palace, or marvel at the locals' pyramid-like rice barns.
A majority of Sumbawans are Muslims. The west part of the province used to be a dependency of the great Majapahit Empire. As such, India has a great influence on the province's culture, including the people's dishes like the popular Ikan Bakar (barbecued fish).
