It has been its uniqueness that placed Nusa Tenggara in the orbit of global tourism. From the world's largest lizards to the smallest elephants, from the highest surfs to the deepest coral gardens, from the weirdest to the spiciest food, and from the noisiest parties to the calmest of beaches, Nusa Tenggara sends tourists agape.
Nusa Tenggara, also known as Lesser Sunda Islands, is one of the world's few regions where temples can be seen fronting minarets, while mosques are along the same street as chapels. Animist beliefs are in a friendly coexistence with the world's major religions in Nusa Tenggara's provinces: Bali is Hindu; Lombok and Sumbawa are Islamic; Flores is predominantly Catholic; while Alor, Solor and Timor are Protestant.
Nusa Tenggara's No. 1 bet is Bali, Indonesia's most popular tourist attraction for its spectacular beaches, culinary wonders, energetic nightlife, gaudy festivals, and spiritually-charged culture and people. Kuta is the island's world-class surfing destination. Indonesia's famed gamelan orchestra and wayang kulit shadow puppet show can be seen in Ubud, Bali's cultural center. At Bali's highland is Sayan, known for its rice terraces and local crafts.
Likely to become "the next Bali" is Lombok, an island group of "hidden" beaches and waterfalls, more unspoiled and peaceful than Bali. Lombok's central volcano, Mount Rinjani, is Indonesia's third highest peak. Lombok's Gili Islands is a backpackers' haven and a fast-growing up-market destination on account of its inexpensive accommodation, beach parties and low-lying corals, where travelers can snorkel, surf or dive with turtles.
The photogenic fishing community of Labuanbajo is a jump-off point to Komodo National Park, which occupies the islands of Komodo, Rinca and Padar. The park is home to Komodo dragons, the world's largest lizards, and to spectacular dive sites cradling manta rays, sharks, turtles, whales, and dolphins.
East of Komodo is Nusa Tenggara's Flores province, dubbed "Indonesia's Middle Earth" for being the land of hobbit-like early humans, giant Komodo dragons, and dwarfish Stegodon elephants. At the heart of Flores is Mount Kelimutu, a lunar-like active volcano whose caldera has a tri-colored lake that constantly changes hues. Flores' Sumbawa Island attracts surfers looking for seemingly "undiscovered" surf spots, while the city of Mataram is known for its mythical "Fountain of Youth," whose waters are believed to give its drinkers the promise of everlasting life.
