In the ancient world, volcanoes are feared for their destructive power. Today, active volcanoes such as Gunung Batur are not only being flanked by villages, but are admired and trekked by travelers with a penchant for danger. For those who frequently attach the phrase "been there, done that" to garden picnics, mountain climbing, and river fishing, Gunung Batur offers a different take on these activities. They often trek the volcano's straight slope heading to the summit of the 28-thousand-year-old central cater, which feeds Danau Batur with a constant supply of lava flow. Since its 1804 eruption, the volcano has been restless in coughing out lava, but the Kedisan and the Toya Bungkah people do not seem to care. They even entrust their crops on the volcano's fertile lap.
