In a nutshell
Bali has been consistently called "paradise" and for a good reason. Ever since the '70s hippies and surfers "discovered" this island's unspoiled beaches, tourism has become as big as ever. Not even the terrorist attacks of 2002 and 2005 shook Bali off its feet as Indonesia's number one tourist attraction. In fact, 80 percent of the country's annual tourists visit Bali and Bali alone because every "to see" in a traveler's list can be checked here: beaches, cuisine, nightlife, festivals, and culture.
Island of the gods
Believed to be the "Island of the gods," Bali is the lone Hindu in the predominantly Muslim Indonesia. Every facet of Balinese life is infused with combined Hinduism and animism-from tiny flower offerings (sesajen) to gelatinous salt and rice poured in every corner of a Balinese house, restaurant, souvenir shop, and airport.
There are about 20 thousand puras (temples) on the island, and each holds its own odalan (festival) at least twice a year, excluding the celebrations for auspicious days and Indonesia 's official holidays like Ramadan. Nyepi eve or Hindu New Year eve every March or April is particularly special as it features a parade of colorful Ogoh Ogoh giants especially in Denpasar.
Something for everyone
The sea-side resorts of Jimbaran and Sanur are for budget travelers while for those who have plenty of rupiahs to splurge, there are the high-end resorts of Nusa Dua and Canggu and the upscale designer bars of Seminyak and Jalan Dhyana Pura. For party-animals, Kuta is Bali's nightlife central. For those in search of bliss, Bedugul's golf club and botanical gardens or Lovina's hot springs, spiced body scrub and massages might just do the trick. Indeed, from north to south, Bali offers something for everyone and the cheapest way to wander is through bemos (minivans).
