Located in Central Himchal Pradesh, this mystic cove is deemed sacred by the followers of India's three prevalent religions, whose ancestors came together to revolt against the Islamic Empire of the Mughals.
While the three great religions share sentiments about this lake, the Buddhists have staked the claim of explaining its origins. They say that the master Padma Sambhava (who brought Buddhism to Tibet) created the cove from a burning pyre.
Devotees believe that the great teacher's spirit still resides in Rewalsar Lake, and it is for this reason that they commemorate the Tsopema Festival, which is actually Padma Sambhava's birthday. Visitors who would like to attend this event may have to wait, though, as this feast only happens every 12 years. The most recent celebration took place in 2004.
