Apart from the breathtaking view of its neighboring snow-capped Kanchenjunga Mountains at dawn, Pelling features a modest array of monasteries, ruins, and a lake that may catch the fancy of avid trekkers. This quaint town is found in West Sikkim and is swathed in lush vegetation, clean air, and distinct local culture.
One of the oldest and most revered monasteries in Sikkim is the Pemayangtse Monastery, which lures visitors not only with its longevity but also with its collection of religious murals and effigies. Every January and February, a dance called Cham which is performed at the temple.
An ideal side-trip is the Rabdanse Ruins, where a former Sikkim capital once stood. This fallen city is framed by lush forests with a smattering of lakes that nurture uncultivated gold fish. Forty-five minutes away from the town proper is the Sangachoeling Monastery, known as the region's second oldest lamasery.
Another revered attraction is the Khecheopari Lake, dubbed as one of the holiest in Sikkim. Animal lovers may want to bring along a few packs of biscuits to throw the crumbs at the lake's school of fish.
