Panaji is a patch of Portugal amidst the spread of temples and gompa (fortifications) found in India. There seems to be no shortage of impeccable design here in Goa's state capital. Red-tiled houses with white arched windows and contemporary upscale hotels line this city's narrow streets, while on its coasts are rows of well-manicured palms that march their way to the golden sand and the sapphire waters.
A prime tourist destination and a major transport hub to the rest of the region's sprawl of immaculate beaches, Panaji fuses Latin panache with the country's distinct lavishness.
Apart from the Goa State Museum (which houses a diverse collection of Christian, Hindu, and Jain artworks), the city prides itself with well-preserved Portuguese architecture such as the Church of My Lady of Immaculate Conception, a towering white house of worship dating back to 1540. There is also the Miramar Beach, the most visited in Goa, where visitors and Panaji's city-slickers can bask in the warm weather or the cool, clean waters.
