Palitana is a frenetic hilltop city known for its despise for violence. What makes this metropolis stand out, however, is the impressive collection of over a thousand Jain temples generously peppered in and around the area.
Located approximately 3,500 steps atop the Satrunjaya Hills, the Jain temples are known as the largest and the most sacred pilgrimage site for Jain. These marble worship houses date back to the 12th to 16th centuries. The images found here depict people as merrymaking or playing musical instruments.
Locals of the town can be seen wearing white and covering their faces with gauze as they flock to the temples. Devotees practicing their faith through belting out religious songs, humming, and clapping is an attraction on its own. While no one is allowed to stay in the temples for the night, there are dharmashala (guest houses) around the town for lodging.
