A short ride away from Jhansi, Orchha is a lethargic settlement that still exudes a majestic atmosphere reminiscent of its days as the seat of power of the Bunkelhand Empire. Walking around this easygoing community takes visitors back in time, with its elaborate temples and the Jahangir Mahal, a multi-tiered palace with far-reaching townscapes.
The town's prime attraction is the Raj Mahal, which rivals Jahangir Mahal when it comes to grandeur and religious images. Built by Madhukar Shah, Raj Mahal's exteriors mask the lavish design of the murals inside.
Another attraction worth a visit is the Ram Raja Temple, where Rama (an incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu) is worshipped as king. This well-known avatar (incarnation) is believed to be still residing inside the temple. Just nearby is the Laxminarayan Temple, which houses some of Orchha's most impressive murals.
