Pushkar, a Hindu pilgrimage town near Ajmer in the state of Rajasthan in India, occupies an important place in Hindu mythology. It is associated with Lord Brahma, the Creator of the Universe, who created, offered sacrifice and hallowed this place. Pushkar is one of the oldest towns of India with evidences of its existence dating back to 4th Century AD. As such, Pushkar has witnessed the rise and fall of many civilizations, each casting a unique influence over its heritage. It is connected to the outside world through air, rail and road. Ajmer, 11 km from Pushkar, is the nearest railway station and Jaipur, at a distance of 146 km, is the nearest airport.
Visit to a Hindu pilgrimage site can not be complete without a trip to its temples. And Pushkar has got more than its share, both ancient and contemporary remarkably supplementing each other. Brahma Temple, a 14th Century structure, is the oldest and the most sacred temple here. It is also, perhaps, the only temple where Lord Brahma is worshiped. Other important temples of Pushkar are Savitri Temple, on the hill-top famous for breathtaking view overlooking the Puskar Lake, Varah Temple, a 12th Century structure dedicated to amazing incarnation of Lord Vishnu in which he takes a wild boar form, Mahadeva Temple, a contemporary structure known for its elegance, and Ramavaikunth Temple, a large and ornate structure housing beautifully sculpted images of hundreds of Hindu deities.
However, Pushkar Lake is the heart of this religious city. Believed by Hindus to be as old as creation and wash way sins of a lifetime, it is a marvel to see the blue oasis in desert landscape of Rajasthan. There are scores of bathing platforms for the convenience of the devotees, who flock here in large numbers for holy dips on the occasion of Kartik Purnima (night of the full moon said to be the anniversary of the lake's creation by Lord Brahma) in the month of November.
This time of the year has another special significance for the people of the area. Come November, and the sleepy town of Pushkar starts bustling with activity. For, it is the time when Pushkar Fair, the world's largest annual camel fair, takes place. An incredible number of camels and other livestock change hands. The significance of the occasion, however, transcends economics. It presents the humanity living in this part of the world at their vibrant best. No wonder, therefore, Pushkar Fair attracts thousands of tourists from different parts of the world every year.
