Maharashtra is considered to be the richest state in India, accounting for around 15 percent of the country's total industrial output. It is also one of the largest and most populous, stretching 307,731 square kilometers from the Arabian Sea all the way to the nation's heartland. A cauldron of different cultures, impressive historical sites, and intoxicating natural beauty, Maharashtra is truly a must-visit in India.
Tourists' usual first stop in Maharashtra is most likely its bustling capital, Mumbai. Formerly known as Bombay, it is the state's financial and commercial hub, and is recognized for being the center of Indian film, popularly referred to as "Bollywood." Visitors to the city are welcomed by the sight of the impressive Gateway to India, a massive arch built out of yellow basalt and reinforced concrete. A trip to Mumbai may be incomplete without a visit to the Elephanta Caves, which are found in the Elephanta Island lying just an hour's boat ride away from the Gateway to India. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is famous for its amazing rock temples that were hewn masterfully out of massive basalt rocks. There is also the Gandhi National Park, a nature reserve filled with various flora and fauna.
Another noteworthy destination is Pune, an education powerhouse that was once called the "Oxford of the East." As the ancient capital of the Peshwa Kingdom, it is filled by relics of its cultural heritage at almost every turn. Visitors can see here the Shaniwarwada, a sprawling mansion used by Peshwa royalty in the 18th century. It also has the Pataleshwar Temple, a nice example of Indian rock-cut architecture. Famed for its orange plantations is Nagpur, India's geographical heart locals fondly call the "Orange City." It is known for its concentration of wildlife parks and temples.
Nestled beside the banks of the holy Godavari River, the town of Nasik is a hotspot of religious edifices and festivals. It is recognized for its Kumbh Mela Festival, which happens only once every 12 years and is the largest religious gathering on the planet. Last but not the least is Kolhapur, which highlights a landscape peppered by historical sites bequeathed to it by an extensive history that included it being the capital of an ancient Maratha state.
