Nestled on the coasts of the Gulf of Kutch, the quaint town of Jamnagar is a hodgepodge of rich cultural heritage, nature preservation parks, and stretches of unspoiled beaches. Unfortunately, though, this 250-year-old city is a frequently overlooked character in India’s tourist scene, as many tourists are blinded by the glitter of the more popular stars. But if one is interested in an equally beautiful off-the-beaten path, with a secluded atmosphere to boot, then Jamnagar might be the place.
Indian and European fusion
One of the town’s highlights is Darbargadh Palace, which once served as the seat of power for the Rajput royalty who had ruled over the land. Considered as the most important historical site in Jamnagar, it features a distinctive style of architecture that fuses Rajput and European influences. It is characterized by exquisitely-carved designs and features, as well as by its Venetian-Gothic arches and Jarokha balconies.
Ancient weapons and crafts
Another noteworthy attraction is the imposing Lakhota Fort, situated on a picturesque island lying in the middle of the Lakhota Lake. Built by the Maharaja of Nawenagar, one can still see the ruins of its semi-circular bastions, turrets, and a pavilion, which used to store weapons and ammunition. It also has a small museum that displays a collection of 9th to 18th century sculptures and ancient pottery.
Birdlife and marine life
Nature lovers can also head to the Khijadia Bird Sanctuary, a wetland reserve sprawling over an area measuring roughly 605 hectares. Established in 1982, it is a haven for avid bird watchers as it is home to a vast collection of avian life, most notably the rare Great Crested Grebe. One can also spot the little grebe, purple moorhen, pheasant-tailed jacana, and black-winged stilt, as well as harriers, eagles, hawks, and migratory birds like swallows, martins, and waterfowl. There is also the so-called Marine National Park, recognized as the first-ever of its kind in India. Composed of an archipelago of 42 islands, it covers an area of 458 square kilometers and provides sanctuary to a host of marine life such as dolphins, porpoises, turtles, tropical fish, and coral reefs.
