Although Goa is India's smallest state area-wise, it still manages to offer everything that a tourist can look for their money's worth. The first thing that strikes you about Goa is its strong Portuguese influence. Traces of the Portuguese culture can be noticed in its monuments, churches, private houses as well as government offices. Goa is well known all over the world, for its beaches, friendly locals and for its relaxed pace of life. It can easily make you feel laidback with its comfortable surroundings. On the other hand, it can also pump up your heart-beats with its party-like atmosphere which can be experienced at many beaches.
The Aguada Fort is an important landmark of Goa. It is used as a prison nowadays. It also contains a 19th century built lighthouse within its premises. Dona Paula, another important landmark, is located in an isolated bay. It is a favorite spot which is dominated by myths connected with a woman from the past named Dona Paula de Menezes. It is also a spot where two important rivers of Goa the Zuari and the Mandovi meet the Arabian Sea. The Cabo Raj Bhavan, which is the official residence of the Governor of Goa, is located on the westernmost tip of Dona Paula. Legend has it that Dona Paula was waiting for her lover and he never came.
Goa is truly blessed with wildlife. The Salim Ali Bird sanctuary offers all bird lovers a chance to spot birds from many rare species and compare notes with other experts. Equally interesting is its wildlife sanctuaries which easily exhibit a large number of animals and reptiles. Go wild by roaming in the green cover of Goa and get a taste of mangoes, jackfruits and pineapples in their natural form. Kids can be taken to the Mayem Lake as they will enjoy the experience of seeing egrets, herons and other lovely water birds and also can save these lovely memories on their cameras.
A stop at Calangute beach, Goa's most popular beach is necessary as not only will you enjoy a walk on the beach but will also get to taste lip-smacking seafood in the various bars and restaurants all around the beach. Anjuna beach is a popular hippy hangout area and also offers nightlife full of nonstop dancing on the beaches. The list of good beaches in Goa is quite large. Every beach has its own specialty.
Finally Goa also has some beautiful temples like Sri Devaki Krishna Temple, Mahadeva Temple, Sri Mahalakshmi Temple and Sri Saptakoteshwara Temple which truly deserve a respectful visit.
