The East Sikkim district of the Indian state Sikkim is often deemed to be its most important, either politically, industrially, or tourism-wise. Found in the state's southeastern corner, its landscape is peppered by a smattering of sights that are bound to catch the attention of many passing travelers. Though it's not a very popular tourist destination, it however merits a look if one has the time to spare.
Probably the highlight of a visit to East Sikkim is the city of Gangtok, which functions as the capital of the entire state of Sikkim. Perched near the top of a hill, it is extremely true to its name, roughly meaning "hillside." Its most arresting attraction is the so-called Enchey Monastery which lies right in the middle of a forest. Literally the "Solitary Temple," it has served as an important shrine for the Nyingmapa order for more than 200 years up to the present. Legend has it that it stands on the exact spot blessed by the Tantric master Drupto Karpo, who is credited with possessing the power of flight. It comes alive during the Chaam, a religious masked dance festival held every January.
Another worthy attraction is the Dodrul Chorten, a stupa considered to be one of the most important in the state. It was commissioned by the Venerable Trullshi Rinpoche, the leader of the Nyingmapa order, in 1945. One may also head to the Rumtek Dharma Chakra Center, known to be the seat of the Tibetan Buddhism's Kagyu Order. Designed to be a close replica of the Kagyu Monastery in Tibet, it displays a traditional style of architecture and a rich collection of religious artifacts and scriptures.
Nature-lovers can't go wrong visiting the sacred Tsomgo Lake, nestled on an escarpment measuring around 3,780 meters in height. Translated literally, it means "the Source of the Lake." It is frozen for much of the year, but its lush banks offer refuge for numerous species of wildlife. There is also the Fambong La Wildlife Sanctuary, as well as the Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary that both provide homes for a diverse collection of flora and fauna. Visitors can catch a glimpse of animals such as Himalayan black deer, red pandas, musk deer, and flowers like poppies, rhododendrons, and primulas to name a few.
