Dehra Dun is one of the more popular hill resort destinations for tourists in India. The capital of the state of Uttarakhand, it is found in the Doon Valley and bordered all around by the famed Himalayan Mountains, the Sivalik Hills, and the Ganga and Yamuna Rivers. In fact, the city prides itself with being the headquarters of the Survey of India renowned for being the first to determine the actual height of Mt. Everest, led its former Surveyor General Sir George Everest.
Dehra Dun is endowed with a rich cultural heritage, as evidenced by its smattering of ancient temples that dot the landscape. One of these is the impressive Tapkeshwar Shiv Temple nestled by the banks of a rivulet. Dedicated to the god Shiva, its distinctive feature is a rock that continually drips water on an image of the god resting in a shrine. There is also the Laxman Siddha Temple, said to be a place that a famed sager once performed penance in, thereby attracting numerous devotees to its doors every day. Another is the Santala Devi Temple, where it is believed that the goddess Santala Devi and her brother were turned into stone as the answer to their prayers of escaping the advancing Mughal Army.
Nature-lovers can't go wrong heading to the Rajaji National Park, a vast nature reserve that sprawls 820 square kilometers in area by the foothills of the Himalayas. Established in 1983, it was formed by merging the locale's three previous wildlife sanctuaries, the Chilla, Motichur, and Rajaji. Its terrain is characterized by its forests of sal, riverine, and pine trees, as well as sections of grassland. In addition, visitors can catch a glimpse of rare wildlife such as Asian elephants, Bengal tigers, goat-like gorals, sloth bears, Himalayan black bears, king cobras, barking deer, and fire-tailed sunbirds.
Another is the uniquely-named Robber's Cave found only a short drive from the city's center. A favorite haunt of picnickers, visitors are invariably amazed with its bizarre stream that suddenly goes underground and appears a short distance away. One may also check out the Malsi Deer Park that lies at the foot of the Shivalik Mountains, and is advisable for the tourists who have children in tow. A highlight in Dehra Dun is the Sahastra Dhara, which literally means "Thousand-fold Spring." It features a mini-falls that drops down from a height of nine feet and leaves a trail of lime along its path, as well as a sulphur spring that is said to possess curative properties.
