Assam literally means "unequalled" or "unrivalled." Although this humble town may not give justice to the name, its rolling plains, dense wooded forests, charming hills, and strong traditions are notable enough to brand it as a destination. Considered to be the gateway to India's northeastern tip, it is further accentuated by the fabled Brahmaputra River that gallantly snakes through the region, as well as its location at the base of the eastern Himalayan foothills. Nevertheless, Assam's claim to fame is its thriving tea plantations renowned worldwide.
It is hardly surprising, then, that the highlight attraction in Assam is the so-called nerve center of its tea-making industry, Jorhat, which has miles after miles of tea farms that stretch as far as the eyes can see. It also takes pride with its respected Teklai Experimental Center that conducts extensive research on new tea varieties and especially their therapeutic qualities. Jorhat is not all about tea, though. Found in the Brahmaputra River is the largest river island on the planet, the Majuli Island, known for its numerous satras (monasteries) that dominate its landscape. Jorhat also possesses the Nambar Forest Reserve that is visited mainly for its rejuvenating hot spring.
Another worthy attraction in Assam is the hill station of Haflong which bears in its heart the charming Haflong Lake. Flower-lovers are bound to enjoy themselves at the station, as it is home to many varieties of orchids, particularly the rare blue vanda. Nearby is the town of Jatinga, where some species of migratory birds bizarrely commit "mass suicide," and is thus a major attraction for scientists studying the event, or tourists who just want to witness the phenomenon.
Tourists can find the tallest Shiva Temple of India in the city of Sibsagar. Nestled by the banks of a vast man-made lake called the Sibsagar Tank, it was commissioned by Queen Madambika of the Ahom Kingdom in 1734. In addition, Assam also boasts of one of the largest weaving villages in the world, Sualkachi. While it produces a variety of quality silks, such as the White Pat and the Eri, it had built its fame on the excellent Muga - a kind of golden silk that is unique to the land.
