Called the "Land of the Dawn-Lit Mountains," the state of Arunachal Pradesh is the place in India touched by the fist rays of sun. Located in the country's northeastern tip, it is a relatively remote region that is honored in the Hindu lore as the Prabhu Mountains of the Puranas in the great epic Mahabharata. It is said to have been the place where Lord Krishna married Rukmini, the sage Parashuram washed his sins away, and the King Bhishmaka founded his kingdom.
True or not, Arunachal Pradesh's rich cultural heritage and natural beauty is legendary in its own right, characterized by ancient architectural ruins, thick woodlands, forbidding terrain, and diverse flora and fauna. Probably the highlight of a visit is the capital itself, Itanagar, which was once a part of the Mayapur Kingdom in the 14th century. Known for its edifices that gently crawl on the slopes of its vivid-green hills, Itanagar is bound to amaze with tourists with the historical Ita Fort. Built entirely out of bricks, it reputedly took more than 46,000 man-days to complete.
Another attraction is the Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum, which displays a collection of artifacts that tell much about the history of the city and its surrounding areas. One can see inside a trove of art, musical instruments, religious relics, archaeological finds, weapons, textiles, and ornaments. The Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary, on the other hand, sprawls with 140 square kilometers of habitation for wild elephants, barking deer, Bengal tigers, leopards, and various species of birds.
The more adventurous visitors to Arunachal Pradesh can't go wrong with a sojourn in the Tawang region, inhabited by mostly ethnic Monpa tribes and Mahayana Buddhist sects. It is famed for the Galden Namgyal Lhatse monastery that towers over the landscape, and offers some nice trekking and hiking opportunities. Another place for adventurers is Bomdila, whose rugged terrain is dominated by mountains, a smattering of snow, idyllic weather, and a welcoming populace.
There is also the Malinithan Temple, which stands as a prime pilgrimage destination. Lying at the base of the Siang foothills, it is associated with the Lord Krishna, and even provides an unimpeded view of the fabled Akashi Ganga Waterfalls and the Brahmaputra River. Flower-lovers will definitely enjoy themselves in Bhalukpong, which takes pride in its exceptional orchidarium that displays hundreds of rare orchid species.
