With rich wildlife and the world’s largest tree canopies, the Iwokrama Forest in central Guyana sets the tone for unbridled eco-adventure. Pinned at the heart of the Guiana Shield, one of the world’s last pristine tropical jungles, the 1,430-mile Iwokrama is the center of ecotourism, conservation, and sustainable forestry program in Guyana.
Alongside the forest banks runs the Essequibo, Guyana’s longest river and the largest river between the Amazon and Orinoco. Here visitors can find the world’s largest otter, pit viper (Bushmaster), caiman, and freshwater turtle. In addition, it is also home to America’s biggest cat, the jaguar, and South America’s largest bat, eagle, and snake (Anaconda). Despite this heavyweight list of “biggest” and “largest,” adventurers still trudge this river by canoe.
Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, once called upon the massive conservation of Iwokrama and its ecosystems, which are home to the world’s highest species of fish (over 420), bats (90), and birds (over 500). In addition, the jungle has also been identified as a global hot seat for several plant families, including colossal tropical trees that form dense canopies of 20 to 30 meters high, from which the forest earned its moniker, “Canopy Capital of Guyana.”
