Georgetown is considered as the “Garden City of the Caribbean,” a melting pot of verdant boondocks, diamond mines and an abundance of natural wildlife. Nonetheless, a view of the city from the Demerara River shows a different facet: a country that has the spirit of bohemian Latin America interlaced with its undeniable European bourgeois. Visitors can easily pinpoint its pleasant disparity, from a large clock that looms at the center of the town to its botanical gardens and the surrounding flora in bloom, Georgetown is truly the crown jewel of Guyana.
A ride through tree-lined boulevards leading to an array of colonial structures like the world’s tallest wooden building, St. George’s Cathedral, gives the impression that one is in Europe. Georgetown’s intellectual scene also fuels its history, particularly in the Museum of Guyana, where documents about the nation’s cultural, social and political chronicles can be found. One of the manuscripts from the Museum narrate the city’s official proclamation under the scepter of England’s Queen Victoria, who named the city after her father, King George III.
At nighttime, the surrounding parks and markets turn from noisy and rowdy to colorful and musical. Particularly, the Sheriff Street is said at its liveliest during the dark since music pours all-night-long from its strip of bars.
