Kakheti is Georgia's wine paradise, each village brewing its own variety with all kinds of grapes. Every house offers a glass of wine so visitors are advised to hold down their liquor intake. For a full tour of how wine is made, travelers can check out the Tsinandali Winery and the Kindzmarauli Winery. Kindzmarauli produces intoxicating sweet wine perfected for centuries.
Medieval history and art
Travelers can also get drunk on the province's history, as they visit the historical monasteries, churches, mansions, and castles. The most prominent historical place is the Davit Gareja monastery complex. Inside the monasteries are alluring frescoes dating back from the 12th to 18th centuries. There is also the Alaverdi Monastery, which dates back to the 6th century. The cathedral that stands here today was built in the 11th century.
From castles to contemporary buildings
Kakheti's premier castle is Gremi, whose architecture dates back to the 16th century. Inside are a royal citadel and the Church of the Archangels surrounded by turrets, towers, and embrasures. A secret tunnel to the Ints'obi River has also managed to survive. The Church fuses designs from traditional Georgian masonry and contemporary Iranian architecture. Built mainly of stone, it has three entrances facing west, south, and north. Its façade is also divided into three.
Lively festivals
The province is at its liveliest during the grape harvest or rtveli in September or October. Included in the celebration are musical events and several feasts.
