The capital of French Guiana located in a 10 square mile island in the middle of Cayenne River. A department of France, Cayenne is ethnically diverse and is known for its annual carnival starting from New Year’s Day to the following week punctuated by the world famous Mardi Gras Festival. Medieval Spain once tried to colonize this island but gave up on it until its French occupation in the 16th century. The island was thus handed down a culture of festivals and opulent rituals that is practiced to this day.
The Cayenne-French affair brought about a diverse mix of people such as the Guianese Creole, followed by Haitians, Brazilians, Europeans and the Hmongs, a group of Laotian refugees. Its diverse background and heritage brought about street scenes that through the years pilfered to the Avenue Général de Gaulle, the center for commercial establishments. The festivities offer generous servings of the French Guiana favorite, Roti (curry meat and vegetables sandwich), all-night costume soirees, and Sunday afternoon parades.
At the east end of the Avenue General de Gaulle are majestic hotels and other polished colonial and official structures, as well as 17th century ruins. At the center of the avenue is the Musée Départmental featuring a dark stuffed caiman, alongside preserved critters, an ethno-botanical display, and an air-conditioned butterfly room. Upstairs, exhibits of Ameridian handicrafts figure with reenactments of Cayenne’s past life as a French penal colony.
