The Glossary
It's raining cats and dogs in Suva, the Fijian capital built on mangroves. There is hardly a day that passes by without rain in this city, yet it is the main port, the commercial and political center of Fiji, and the largest urban area on the island in the South Pacific outside of Australia and New Zealand. Located on the southeast coast of Viti Levu island, Suva became Fiji's capital in 1877. There is nothing much to do and see in Suva, except for some landmarks like the Reserve Bank, the country's tallest building, as well as colonial constructions such as the Suva City Library and the Government Buildings complex, a structural miracle built on the once flowing waters of a creek. Strings of colonial houses are also found in Suva's shopping areas, particularly in Cumming Street and around the Municipal Handicraft Center, which is crammed with straw goods and handicrafts. Vutu, a local variety of nut that grows abundantly in Bega Island from January to February, is also available throughout the year in Suva's markets.Suva has around 78 parks, which include the Suva Point, a nice corner to see sunrise and sunset; and Thurston Gardens, which stores South Pacific's floral wealth, including the rare Tagimoucia flower. The Fiji Museum in Thurston Gardens has the world's most extensive Fijian artifacts. It is also a research centre and an educational facility that specializes in archaeology and preservation of Fiji's language and culture. Forty-five minutes from Suva is the Pacific Harbor, Fiji's "adventure capital" offering scuba diving, snorkeling, cultural tours, and facilities such as Tiki pools or manmade beach. Apart from being a melting pot of South Pacific and Asian races, Suva is a thriving hub for volunteerism since it is host to more non-government organizations than any other Pacific capital.
