The Glossary
The warmth of country life is the emphasis in Darwin, a settlement in Lafornia, East Falkland. English scientist Charles Darwin, to whom the credit goes for the settlement's name, was the first to experience the place's hospitality when he spent a night there as a young naturalist in 1833.
About a quarter of a century after Darwin's visit, a settlement was formed in his memorial. Erected in 1859, the first edifice was a vicarage that started as the center for shepherding in Lafornia until 1922. Latin American gauchos and Scottish shepherds then joined the sheep farming club until the farm site and its water supply had become too small to accommodate the growing industry, prompting everyone to pack up and transfer to Green Goose, south of Darwin. The only things the shepherds left behind is the Galpon, home to 19th century gauchos, and a newly-restored stone corral.
Today, Darwin could be the doom of the city sleeker since to stare at its emptiness and vastness might make one bored rigid. But with its combined promises of Neverland and provincial life, Darwin takes one back into the beginnings of joie de vivre, when grass rule the streets, horses and cattle run wild, and time flies unnoticed. The settlement banks on simplicity as its finest specialty. Fishing, horse racing, boat excursions to Choiseul Sound, and playing golf at the neighboring Goose Green, are just some of the pursuits that fill up a side trip to Darwin from the larger East Falkland. At the end of the day, the island's only lodge offers country cooking, which includes a sampling of the Falklands' sea bounties and homegrown organic produce.
It's hard to imagine that before meeting its present Nirvana, Darwin has actually saw heavy fighting between British and Argentine forces during the Battle of Goose Green, a fraction of the larger 1982 Falkland War. The Argentine troops hid behind the Darwin Hill before they were finally capsized by the British. A visit to their battlefields and cemeteries may help one to better imagine the real score behind those faithful days.
