Over the years, Parnu, at the southwestern coasts of Estonia, has gained the reputation of being the country's "Summer Capital." It overlooks the Gulf of Riga and is considered as the most popular destination in the country. Its journey towards being a tourist attraction started in 1837, when a group of entrepreneurs arrived in its shores and immediately saw the potential of its inherent natural beauty. Filled with historical sites, beaches, bars, and nightclubs, there is definitely something in Parnu for everyone.
The order of the day for a tourist in Parnu is to share in the pleasures being offered by its 242-kilometer coastline. A short walk away from the city center takes tourists to the town's golden sand beaches and turquoise waters that provide sunbathing and swimming opportunities. Since they are shallow, Parnu's beaches are calm and warm all-year-round, unaffected even by rainy seasons. One can also take a morning or an evening stroll on the so-called Parnu Beach Boardwalk that was constructed in 2006.
Parnu is also known as a health tourism destination, as attested by its several spas and health resorts dotting the beaches. In fact, Parnu is a member of the European Spas Association, and is visited by spa-seekers from around 50 countries.
Another attraction worthy to be visited in Parnu is the Town Hall, which was once used by the famed Russian czar Alexander I during a sojourn to the city in 1806. Displaying a distinct Classicist influence in architecture, the hall was actually built in 1797 as the residence of a merchant until it was bought by the government in 1819 for administrative use. Near to it is the so-called Red Tower, considered to be the oldest edifice in the city. Dating back to the 17th century, it is the sole remaining reminder of Parnu's original fortress.
Regarded as one of the most picturesque structures in Estonia, the St. Catherine's Church was built in 1768 through the orders of Empress Catherine II. The Baroque church is a forerunner of the many orthodox churches in the Baltic States. There is also the 18th-century Elizabeth Church, considered to be among the country's best examples of a Baroque structure in Estonia.
