Although it is only 200 square kilometers in area, Muhu is ranked as the third largest island in Estonia. Found just 10 kilometers off the mainland's western coast, the island is believed to have been elevated out of the deep at around 8,000 years ago, and it is said to be still rising up. It was colonized in 2,500 BC, and the resulting cultural heritage now makes the island an open-air museum that boasts of some of the oldest artifacts in the country.
Nevertheless, Muhu is best known for is its natural beauty, which has somehow remained largely off the tourists' radar. This makes the island suitable for backpackers and nature lovers looking for a quiet, secluded vacation. The island is also inhabited by only around 2,000 people, with a landscape more or less dominated by patches of woodlands, juniper (the national tree) forests, carpets of moss, and massive rock formations.
The lack of development in the island has allowed nature to thrive here, and the island today boasts of a rich and unique flora and fauna. Muhu is home to around 23 species of rare orchids, including an equally rare species of sea eagle. One can also catch glimpses of wildlife such as foxes, deer, and moose, including a flock of migratory birds.
Considered to be among the oldest of its kind in Estonia is the Gothic St. Catherine's Church. It is believed to have been built in the 13th century near the site of a devastating battle that eventually resulted in the country being ruled by foreign empires for many years. It is characterized by its Byzantine-influenced murals that adorn its walls and ceilings, as well as by the trapezoidal tombstones scattered throughout the complex. One can also see the unique tombstone depicting a "Tree of Life," which is peppered with numerous pagan symbols.
Another attraction worthy of a visit is the Uugu Bluff, a sprawling rock formation that is regarded as the most picturesque in Muhu. This 300-meter-long rock stands 2.5 meters in height. It offers a sweeping view of the island's scenic coasts by the Baltic Sea.
Apart from these, Muhu is also known for its weaving and embroidery craft. Here, visitors can buy traditional costumes and exquisite Muhu blankets.
