The Glossary
Owing to its popularity as the site where French scholar Jean-Francois Champollion discovered the historic Rosetta stone, Rosetta or Ar-Rashid became the 19th century poster child for cleanliness, well-manicured gardens, citrus and palm orchards, and charming Ottoman mansions. Through the years, however, Rosetta declined into a port city crammed with stalls, low-quality streets, shabby donkey carts, and halted restoration projects that turn off a lot of tourists. Despite this grimy facade, however, Rosetta still demands attention for its well-preserved Ottoman-era houses and felucca rides to the Nile.
Located in the Mediterranean coast of Egypt, Rosetta is made unique by its collection of 12 mosques, castles, mills, and public baths like Hammam Azouz. Among the town's landmarks is the Abu Madour Tower, where Vivien Dinon, a famed historian of the French expedition, observed the famous Abu-Qeer naval battle between the French and the British fleets.
