The mere mention of the Nile conjures images of pyramids, the Sphinx of Giza, Cleopatra, the inscrutable hieroglyphics, tales of mummies and troves of treasures. The true essence of Nile, however, is its representation of life for ancient and modern Egypt. For thousands of years, the river has made life possible for the many civilizations that have shaped the country's unique culture which we are just beginning to understand.
An odyssey down the world's longest river is a highlight in itself. It's in the heart of the Nile River Valley that holds some of the most enigmatic mysteries of ancient civilization. Thousand of scholars traverse the terrain, digging pieces of evidence about how the ancient Egyptians lived. Up to this day, many questions still remain, such as how the colossal pyramids built, why did they mummify their dead, among others.
Today, visitors are not only preoccupied looking for answers to the copious riddle of the Nile but also busy rummaging its marvelous sights. Undoubtedly, Luxor is where much of the treasures are concentrated, starting with Karnak where the impressive Luxor Temple is located, followed by the Valley of the Kings and Queens in Thebes, with the addition of Medinet Habu, Deir el-Bahri's Mortuary Temple and Tombs of the Nobles as runner ups.
Visitors can also sail on the Nile like the Egyptians via felluca and enjoy a cruise from Luxor to Aswan, punctuated with fascinating stops along the way. For an in-depth discovery, they can also visit the Agilkia Island in Philae which houses a beautiful temple complex dedicated to the goddess Isis and the Nubian Monument, a UNESCO Word Heritage Site. A jaunt to Beni Hasan necropolis is another highlight with the royal catacombs of illustrious Egyptian pharaohs like Kheti, Amenehmet II, Khnumhotep II and Baget.
