Medinat Al-Fayoum Travel Guide
One of Egypt's Pharonic-era towns, Medinat Al-Fayoum is famed for its Egyptian death masks made during the heydays of the Romans. Sited southwest of Cairo, Medinat Al-Fayoum occupies the Crocodilopis, which is an ancient site and the center of the cult of Sobek or the "Crocodile God."
Today, Medinat Al-Fayoum is filled with al fresco markets that can be seen brushing elbows with mosques like Qa'it Bay Mosque, built by Mamluk Sultan Al-Ashraf Sayf al-Din Qa'it Bay, along with many hammams (public baths), which locals frequent during the weekly market. There is not much to see here other than the Pyramids of Amenemhat III at Hawara and the mud brick Pyramid of Sessostris II at Al-Lahun. A stroll around Bahr Yussef, however, may be a rewarding experience as this narrow canal is lined with old mud houses with a view of the Lake Moeries, where the sacred crocodile is kept during the ancient times.
Art buffs can also check out the Fayoum Egyptian mummy portraits of Medinat Al-Fayoum, which can be found at the Faiyoum Necropolis. Much of the portraits' brilliant colors are still well-preserved since the ancient times.
