Marsa Matruh Travel Guide
Named Paraitonion during the times of the Byzantine and Paraetonium Roman era, Marsa Matruh is another slice of paradise not only for beach goers but also for Caireness families wishing to drown the summer heat in the beaches' immaculate sand and cerulean waters.
Once a sleepy fishing village used as a seaport and a trading route, Marsa Matruh is now a beachfront resort town teeming with people from afternoon till sundown. The beach's promenade is also filled with local Egyptian hawkers selling food, knick knacks, and some island souvenirs. Egyptian music can also be heard here, alongside the shouts and clamor of beachcombers frolicking around.
After summer, however, Marsa Matruh returns into being a lethargic "ghost town," with virtually no tourists on sight other than the native Libyans and Bedouins fishing or stocking some goods for a living.
