The Glossary
Hemmed half-way between Suez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea is Ismailia, a popular beach resort to holiday makers and beachcombing crowd. Part of Ismailia's eccentric character is defined by the rail line that divides the city.
In the south of the tracks are old British colonial houses and European-styled garden. Extending to the lush banks of the Suez Canal are whitewashed, leafy boulevards and unruffled streets of villas which are a throwback to the 1930's. North of the rail is another world: hurriedly constructed two-door apartments, slums and shanty quarters, well-heeled neighborhood of Nemrah Setta, an elite commune of French colonial styled villas outside the town.
There is not much to see in Ismailia other than the sprawling lawns and country house which includes Ferdinand De Lessep's House, (residence of the French Consul to Egypt), the Garden of the Stelae (home to a sphinx of Ramses II) and the Ismailia Museum (a repository of more than 4000 artifacts, dating back to Pharaonic and Greco-Roman eras). Among the troves of treasures are the 4th century AD mosaic of Greek and Roman mythology, scarabs, stelae, statues of pharaohs, and the old record of Suez Canal.
To those who wish to stay for a day or two, cheap hotels nearby provide modest accommodations. Restaurants near the hotels offer visitors a sample of Egyptian cuisines. To discover an eerie part of Ismailia culture, visitors should visit the annual feast called Limbo Festival where dolls representing whomever the participants hate are burned in the streets at nightfall. Those who want a quick escape from the town can take a jaunt to nearby destinations Sharm el-Sheik, Hurghada, and the capital Cairo.
