The Glossary
Much of El Alamein or "The Two Flags" is linked to Winston Churchill for the memorable words he uttered upon winning the Second World War: "This is not the end, nor is it even the beginning of the end, but it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."
Although delivered in America, Churchill's famous words, nonetheless, strongly fits El Alamein as this minuscule town in northern Egypt had a fair share of the tales that surround the First Battle of El Alamein and the Second Battle of El Alamein, the two consecutive battles between the Germans and the British between July and November of 1942.
Today, what is left of the battles can be seen in El Alamein War Museum, which houses war memorabilia, and the Italian and German Military Cemetery, which is located atop a hill where thousands of German and Italian soldiers are buried. Some of the gravestones are marked "ignoto" or unknown or unidentified. There is also a Commonwealth War Cemetery with several crypts of British soldiers.
