Quito styles itself as “Luz de America,” which means the “Light of America.” Though some may consider the bold statement doubtful, those who have seen the city firsthand can attest to its beauty. Its setting alone captures the imagination, tucked between the Andean valley and a rush of jagged volcanic peaks. The drawback, though, is that it is the only capital in the world to be under constant threat from an active volcano.
More importantly, Quito is home to more than 1.3 million people, second-largest in Ecuador. Of these, more than half are of mestizo descent, while the rest are from the country's numerous indigenous tribes. As such, the city is blessed with a unique melting pot of cultures, revealed through its cuisine and festivals.
Old Town
What Quito is perhaps most known for is its immense historical heritage. At around 320 hectares, it has possibly the largest and best preserved old town sector than anywhere else in Latin America. A dizzying maze of colonial architecture left behind by the Spaniards, it is one of the first in the world to be declared UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978 (along with Krakow).
Quito's Old Town experienced some setbacks during the 1990s, however, when it was briefly forgotten by the government and its sketchy streets began to become dangerous to tourists. Fortunately, a massive restoration project was undertaken a few years ago, culminating in 2006, and it is ripe for exploration once more. Highlights include the San Francisco (said to be the first ever religious building in South America), San Augustine, and the La Compañia Churches.
New Town
After revealing its Old Town, Quito entices visitors with its modern side. Though it has stayed true to its historic roots, it has branched out into the 21st century. Now, it features a heady mix of skyscrapers, multi-story hotels, and building complexes. The nightlife is also buzzing, with the city's Mariscal Sucre section littered with dozens of bars, clubs, and discos.
Quito's restaurants warrant a mention as well, serving up Ecuadorian dishes to hungry travelers. The city is a shopper paradise too, and the ears will almost always be filled with the hollers of vendors at its busy shops and malls.
