Cuenca, the capital of Azuay Province, located in the in the southernmost highlands of Ecuador is the third largest city in terms of population. Like the rest of the Ecuadorian Andes, the city enjoys a mild climate whole year round. Baroque churches, cobblestoned streets and old monuments, like the Historic Centre of Santa Ana de los Rios de Cuenca, lend an Old World feel into a city that is proud of its heritage and history. Many of its landmarks have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Most tourists are attracted by Cuenca's numerous sights located in the historical town center. The Old Cathedral or the Iglesia de El Sagario, is a small but well-restored cathedral turned to museum. It houses a number of monuments and art works. The Monastery of El Carmen de Asuncion, founded in 1682, hosts a colorful flower market adding color and contrasts to its red stone façade. These religious monuments with narrow cobblestones streets are easily traversable by land.
Around town tourist activities vary from place to place. In Jima, a little community surrounded by hillsides and mountains, hiking and camping is the preferred sport for travelers. The lush tropical forests found in this area are inhabited by several thousand species of birds and mammals. Less than 50 kilometers from Cuenca, the town of Chordeleg invites tourists to view traditional weavers, embroiders and potters. The Cañar plantation near-by highlights the biggest Inca ruins in Ecuador.
