The city of Puerto Plata comprises the mass tourism capital of the Caribbean and pulls in over a half million tourists each year. Puerto Plata is a vibrant Dominican town of 200,000 that's well worth exploring for its historic architecture and nightlife. Discovered by Christopher Columbus in the 1490's, this natural port is situated on the north of the island. A home to an appealing variety of historic buildings, museums and unimaginable sightseeing opportunities, Puerto Plata is a hub to the local street life and quaint gingerbread houses. In spite of being reigned by a series of all inclusive resorts, Puerto Plata was the first custom built tourist destination in the Dominican Republic.
Broadcasting the islands Merengue music through blaring loudspeakers, Puerto Plata displays a vivid stretch of beige sand beaches flanked by an array of water sports kiosks and deck chairs.
The Playa Dorada, a vacation complex, just east of Puerto Plata is where you will find the main resort hotels of Puerto Plata, along with three casinos, an 18 hole Robert Trent Jones golf course, excellent beach water sports, majestic and well landscaped gardens and bike trails.
The Amber Museum, city's most visited attractions is located near the central park in Puerto Plata. Amber is tree sap that has hardened over thousands of years and many gem experts are of the opinion that the quality and transparency of the semi-precious stones in the Dominican Republic is second to none. Because of its rich deposits of amber, Puerto Plata is nicknames as the Amber Coast.
The Ocean World Adventure Park is truly a visual treat establishing an impressive park with its wildlife inhabitants. Birds and rich fauna from remote areas of the world accompanied by a huge collection of tropical fish, the Ocean World also features the world's largest dolphin lagoon.
Rich Victorian architecture, picturesque sea views and lush flora in the botanical gardens atop Mount Isabel de Torres are Puerto Plata's visual treasures.
When the sun bids good bye to the island, Puerto Plata adorns itself with its second wind. Sit at a bar and relax with a cool beer or a classic martini, Puerto Plata hosts the hottest and raunchiest clubs and bars as well as the coziest hole in the wall spots.
The Puerto Plata culinary scene is varied and ever evolving. Of course the real fun is in sampling the local cuisine of Puerto Plata, but there are widespread choices for the comfort food eaters too in the form of stylish, upscale dining rooms. Rest assured Puerto Plata defies all claims that one must be a jetsetter millionaire to enjoy a tropical paradise.
