Croatia originally served as a province of the great Roman Empire. It became a settlement for the Slavic people known as Croats during the 7th century, who subsequently made a pact with Hungary to submit to its rule in return for protection in 1091. After World War I, it formally became a part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, which was then recognized as Yugoslavia in 1929. However, it disintegrated after the horrors of World War II, and officially gained its independence as the Republic of Croatia in 1991.
