Korhogo Travel Guide
A culturally-charged ancient town, Korhogo is the capital of the Senufo people found in the mountainous north-central region of Côte d'Ivoire. Diamonds are among the common products of the area. During pre-colonial times, it was an important route of a gold trade between Africans and the Roman Empire. Although occasionally stormed by rebels, this town still reverberates with life, as seen in its vibrant tourism industry. A taste of that can be seen in the woodcarvers' quarter, the regional museum of cultural artifacts, and in the markets replete with renowned carved statues.
Believed to have been founded by a 14th-century Senufo patriarch, Korhogo is a town molded by the people's caste system. As the ruling class, farmers are at the top of a society that revolves around farming as the main livelihood and trading lands as an important tradition. Men from 15 to 35 can be seen changing hands on the fields, competing to become the sambali (champion or best cultivator), who is respected in the whole region and is venerated as a great leader. Every dry season, the people stage a festival to celebrate good harvests. Practices such as these have contributed to the Senufo's reputation as excellent farmers.
Senufo males are also engaged in another society called poro, which has a specialized school in the forest teaching young men how to sculpt masks and carvings out of bass and wood. Their products are sold in a big market at the town's center. The nearby village, Koni, is also known for its blacksmiths, who do not only work on iron but also on minerals. Samples of the artisans' best crafts made of different local materials can be found in Péléforo Gbon Coulibaly Regional Museum.
For the women, the greatest achievement is to know how to cook well. One of their specialties is tô or flour porridge served with vegetable sauces. A women's society called sandogo is the representative of Korhogo's animistic civilization. Sandogo is responsible for divination and performing rituals that summon spirits to help in good harvest, fertility, and good health.
Korhogo's only airport receives regular domestic flights from major points in the country such as Abidjan. The town also has its own cinema, cheap hotels, public pool, and places of worship like mosques and Christian churches.
