A ghost town aura engulfs Grand Bassam, a former French colonial capital east of Abidjan. Weekenders seeking escape from the demands of the city find what they are looking for in this quaint, nostalgic town satiated with old-world charm and cut into half by the romantic Ébrié Lagoon, where ferries trudge to bring in people with a penchant for the dated.
Minibuses and taxis to and from Abidjan and Grand Bassam trek through a road festooned with pineapple and banana plantations. Along the way is Ancien Bassam (Old Bassam), where grand colonial buildings announce loudly that it was a French settlement originally. But that was before the capital was transferred to Bingerville after a yellow fever outbreak. In here stands a cathedral and the former Governor's Palace, where the Musee National du Costume (National Museum of Costume) exhibits traditional clothing, Korhogo cloth, and fashion trends among different tribal groups.
Seafood-dining in maquis or small, open-air restaurants is the most common activity at the beachfront, where hotels and coco palms face boatmen taking tourists from the shallows of the Atlantic Ocean into Ébrié Lagoon.
A bridge from Ancien Bassam seemingly transports the traveler to a different era, into Nouveau Bassam (New Bassam), which was once the quarters of African slaves, now an up-and-coming crafts and commercial center where artisans sell carvings and painted fabrics.
