In spite having advanced warships from Europe, the entire Chinese Qing army met its end at the hands of a smaller Japanese fleet in what is considered "China's most embarrassing naval defeat": the Battle of Weihai in 1895. Sitting at the tip of Shandong Province, Weihai or Port Edward today shows no signs of the battle, and only little hints of its past incarnation as Weihai Garrison or as a major seaport leased by the British. Nevertheless, what it lacks in historical landmarks it compensates with its golden beaches, scenic Weihai and Huancuilou Parks, and easygoing Liugong Island that is smacked right at the center of the city.
In Wengdeng County, there lies Shengjingshan Mountain and its overlooking temples, where visitors may experience Daoist culture and religion. Anywhere in Wengdeng's beaches is also a good spot for catching ferries to South Korea or for experiencing the life of a fisherman.
