Crisscrossing the antiquated town of Tongli is a system of winding canals evocative of Venetian Italy. A World Heritage Site together with Luzhi and Zhuozhuang, Tongli is a famous day trip route for Suzhou and Shanghai weekenders eyeing a mellow boat trip along the town’s willow-shaded waterways, an unhurried Suzhouan food trip in the town’s diners, or a carefree jaunt to white-washed houses, black-tiled buildings, cobblestone streets, and waterside teahouses.
Several museums still stand in Tongli. Among these is a wax museum depicting dynastic Chinese culture and marriage. A ferry ride away is a scenic islet, Luo Xing, while Suzhou and Shanghai are just 30 minutes to one hour by bus.
