Behind the miniscule, countryside village of Shaoshan is a giant name: Mao Zedong. It is here where the father of People's Republic of China was brought into the world in December 26, 1893. Since Mao rose into prominence, along came with him this village that was once "never-heard" during the Qing Dynasty. During its heyday, around three million trekked here through a bus from Changsha just to eye-ball Chairman Mao's humble birthplace, his monumental Great Helmsman statue, and his family restaurant that spread out to many other Chinese cities like wild fire.
Today, even Mao is no longer there to spearhead the revisiting of his birthplace like he did in 1959, Shaoshan continues to reach the radars of communist heritage pilgrims, albeit in less numbers since the waning of the Cultural Revolution.
