The Glossary
The Mosu, the world's last practicing matriarchal society, has found solid ground in Lugu Hu, a high forest-covered plateau lake on the border of Sichuan and Yunnan. Many Naxi traditions lost in Lijiang can be found in this lake, which is a drop-off point of buses bound for towns like Lijiang and Xiaguan.
Located 2685 meters above sea level, Lugu Hu is 48.5 square kilometers wide and up to 93.5 meters deep. The lake provides sustenance for its surrounding villages, namely, Lige, Yi, Tibetan, and Mosu villages.
April to May and September to October are the best times to visit the lake when the weather is mild and dry.
