The Glossary
Spectacular alpine peaks look over the city of Kangding or Dardo in Sichuan Province. This fast-growing city of mixed Tibetan and Han Chinese is perched 8530 feet above sea level yet the gush of water permeates the town. Apart from its famous temples, monasteries, squares and springs that dabble as arenas for Tai Chi and sports, the city is the site of the second-highest airport in the world.
Buses from Chengdu are the most common way to be in Kangding, but in the city, the apple-of-the-eye is the cable car that brings vacationers to Paoma Mountain, the subject of many local love songs for its romantic views. At the foot of Paoama are temples like Anjue, Namo, and Jinggang, which sells Buddhist goods and prayer flags. For a small fee, tourists may have their lunch at Jinggang's temple kitchen.
At the City Center is Old Town Spring, with English signboards explaining the spring's history as well as the story of the ancient horse races held in Paoma Mountain. Every night, locals dance to the tune of traditional music at the Town Square, near the Old Town Spring.
A taxi ride away from the City Center is Er Dao Qiao, a hot spring resort with a public pool and a private room. Along the same road as the resort is Mugecuo, a national park containing forests, grasslands and lakes.
